Body tracking on ballerina dancer with medipipe and p5.js

Studies of Dance and Flow

A study of translating dance, body and movement into graphical output. Mapping the gracefulness of dance into moving compositions of lines, dots and colors.

What if we use body motion to create organic graphic systems?

This approach transforms the dancer’s body into a living design tool, where every gesture creates fluid visuals. Motion and visual expression become one.

Staatsballett

Starting from free experimentation and prototyping I later developed it further into a speculative motion branding for “Staatsballett”. The idea behind this is to create embodied visual systems that are consistent within motion branding.

Exploration

As an initial test I wanted to see how the motion would be have if the analyzed video is mirrored on a second canvas. It created the feel of puppets and intricate movement. At this stage I identified specific parts of the body that I was interested in an highlighted them with simplified geometric shapes.

Visual language

As a second step I explored different visual elements mapped to the dancer’s pose. There are a lot of variations of lines with different weights, colors and mixing modes. Late I started tracing the movement to create drawings that emerged over time, tracking the flow of motion.
